VMworld Confidential: DataCore iSCSI SAN Software and VMware Virtualization Make Virtual Infrastructures Practical for Everyone

DataCore's Enterprise iSCSI fail-over capabilities leverage VMware's iSCSI support -- ETO Marketing Services Data Center and All

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Today at VMworld, DataCore Software is showcasing the versatility of its SANmelody(TM) SAN software, which supports both Fibre Channel (FC) and iSCSI connectivity. SANmelody software, with its auto fail-over, enterprise-level iSCSI capabilities and state-of-the-art storage services, is an ideal solution for enterprises seeking to implement business continuance and disaster recovery infrastructures supporting VMware ESX environments. Customers who have not implemented a VMware Virtual Infrastructure because of the high cost of FC SANs are finding that SANmelody, which gives users the choice of iSCSI, FC or mixed networks, makes it affordable and practical to do so.

New iSCSI Fail-over and Thin-Provisioning Solutions; Users Tout Cost Savings and Improved Productivity

DataCore has also recently introduced a new Virtualization Infrastructure Foundation entry-level package. The new Virtual Infrastructure Foundation package offers a simple and affordable entry point for users to begin experiencing the many benefits of "going virtual." Its price of less than $1,000 represents a major industry breakthrough for a SAN software solution that includes SANmotion data migration services and thin-provisioning functionality for storage capacity automation.

"SANmelody makes Virtual Infrastructures practical for everyone," said James Price, President of systems integrator and virtualization reseller Fairway Consulting Group, a DataCore partner. "VMware virtualizes servers; DataCore virtualizes storage. The combination is powerful, because DataCore eliminates high SAN costs as a barrier to obtaining the many benefits of server consolidation. Now that VMware also supports iSCSI, this combination can be implemented in practically any business on a standard Ethernet network, without any investment in Fibre Channel infrastructure."

Server consolidation using VMware provides many benefits, but users are strongly advised to implement a SAN with reliable, fail-over capabilities in support of VMware Virtual Infrastructures. When servers are consolidated, more users are depending on fewer physical servers and, therefore, a single failure can affect many users. Most iSCSI storage solutions that are affordable do not perform true and reliable fail-over. On the other hand, most SAN solutions that provide high quality business continuity to FC SAN data centers are too expensive, and are often unavailable, for iSCSI implementations.

"DataCore and VMware enabled us to reduce our administration workload, to simplify server administration, and to automate and rapidly deploy disk space that is so critical to our business," said Francois-Xavier Ousselin, Director of Information Systems at ETO, one of Europe's leading marketing services companies. ETO has improved their overall productivity by implementing a virtual infrastructure that melds VMware and DataCore capabilities across both iSCSI (for simple and economic connectivity over Ethernet LANs) and Fibre Channel (for satisfying the I/O requirements of their most performance-hungry databases). "We have now reduced the time to bring up a new production system and our administration time by a factor of ten or more. Until now, when a new application was launched or when we had to increase storage capacity of an existing system, it took us on average fifteen days to order, test and install a new machine. Today, we can do it all in one day - even in thirty minutes, if needed."

DataCore's SANmelody gives iSCSI customers the best of both worlds. SANmelody SAN software works in FC, iSCSI and blended infrastructures, and all models of SANmelody include iSCSI support as a standard built-in feature (at no additional cost). SANmelody offers iSCSI customers the same business continuity capabilities that DataCore's FC SAN data center customers require but at a price that is practical for the iSCSI market. The flexibility to begin with iSCSI, FC, or both, and then accommodate the natural evolution of the customer's infrastructure is a major advantage of SANmelody over other products that support only iSCSI or FC, but not both.

"DataCore brings unique value beyond providing the shared storage and business continuity features that are necessary to implement server consolidation prudently," said Karen Swanson, IT Director, All Medical Personnel. "It's a complete storage virtualization solution that is as strategic to us as server consolidation. SANmelody made it possible for us to develop our Virtual Infrastructure affordably and efficiently. We can count on higher utilization, easier administration, greater flexibility and lower costs for many years to come."
