Wyse Announces First Thin Computing Reference Platform for Enterprise Desktop Virtualization

NEC First Partner to Support New Wyse Co-development Initiative

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Wyse Technology, the global leader in thin computing, today announced the availability of the first in a series of Thin Computing Reference Platforms designed for major industry players looking to incorporate thin-computing technology into their product portfolios. The first Thin Computing Reference Platform from Wyse is targeted at supporting VMware's Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), called The Wyse Reference Platform for Enterprise Desktop Virtualization. Wyse also announced that NEC will be the first co-development partner leveraging this new reference platform. In a related announcement, NEC is introducing the NEC US100 desktop terminal powered by Wyse Thin OS.

At the heart of the Wyse Reference Platform is the Wyse Thin OS, the smallest, fastest and most secure operating system for thin computing. With a boot time of less than 5 seconds and built-in support for Microsoft Terminal Server, Citrix Presentation Server and VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, Wyse Thin OS leads the industry in performance and deployment flexibility. At less than 2 megabytes in size and with blazing fast performance on even a low-cost processor, Wyse Thin OS gives hardware manufacturers the ability to create lightweight and high-performance thin-computing solutions for a variety of new markets.

To accelerate hardware platform deployment, Wyse has partnered with ServerEngines LLC, a co-developer of next generation system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions with NEC. The NetClient(TM) SoC enables PC functionality and provides local processing of graphics, video, audio, and security functions. Together these technologies deliver a reference for thin computing that can be deployed quickly and cost-effectively by hardware manufacturers seeking to expand their portfolios, while taking advantage of the security and manageability of thin computing.

In addition to all the features of Wyse Thin OS, which has powered industry-leading products such as the Wyse 1125SE, 1200LE and S10 thin clients, Wyse is providing enhancements for Enterprise Desktop Virtualization. Enhancements will include advanced desktop features such as video streaming, Voice over IP, and peripheral virtualization. The Wyse Reference Platform will include server-side technologies, developed by Wyse, to optimize the connection between the server and Wyse Thin OS based devices. Also included are Wyse infrastructure management technologies for simplifying and automating device management operations.
